Gary didn’t even show up to send off the tournament guests; he had Charlie handle it while he hid out of sight.
Alice, on the other hand, was swarmed by the elite.
Humbert, despite being older, acted like a fanboy, trailing after her like a loyal pup.
Byron and Kate even got into a near–argument over who could take her to dinner first. The couple almost got into a fight with Humbert.
Alice was about two seconds away from throwing all of them out.
As the group made their way to the door, they spotted Damon standing just ahead, clearly waiting to intercept them.
In his mind, Alice had been desperate to cozy up to her family. Surely now she’d be thrilled to see him. Maybe she’d even run up and call out his name.
The truth was, Damon used to find her annoying.
But considering she was now behaying, he was willing to show her a little kindness.
He miscalculated.
The group walked right past him. Not a glance. Not a word.
As if he were invisible.
His face darkened with fury.

“Alice!” He barked.
His patience snapped.
Charging forward, he stepped in front of her, forcing her to stop.
“You’d better have something important to say,” she said coolly.
“I’m your brother!” he said indignantly.
“Oh, really?” Alice shot back with a half–smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
Damon faltered.
Ever since the truth about the real and fake daughter incident came out, he had only ever acknowledged Linda as his sister.
This backwoods girl had never been on his radar.
With a tight expression, he huffed, “I get that you’re mad about being neglected, but isn’t it time to get over it?”
Alice let out a sharp laugh.
“Oh? And what makes you think I’m upset?”
Irritation flickered across Damon’s face.
“Look, I’m telling you for your own good–stop while you’re ahead. Keep this up and none of your brothers will talk to you again!”

“You know what happened. Because of you, my mentor’s been blacklisted. You’re the only one who can fix it. It’s all on you now–let’s see how you handle this.”

Alice almost laughed out loud. For a long time, she’d simply assumed Damon wasn’t very bright.
Today, she realized he was something else entirely–an egotist with delusions of grandeur.
Alice narrowed her eyes. “Exactly how full of yourself are you to think I’d sacrifice my own interests just to defend some morally questionable mentor of yours?”
The words hit Damon square in the ego.
“What the heck’s that supposed to mean?”
She rolled her eyes.
“Do I need to spell it out for you?”

That line landed like a slap. A ripple of laughter burst from the small crowd that had gathered to watch the scene unfold.
Damon’s face turned grim.

The fury in his chest was practically audible–he looked like he might explode then and there.
Part of him wanted to go up there, itching to give Alice a few slaps, teaching her a lesson about how to behave as a good sister.
But she just kept walking past, a smirk dancing on her lips.
“You’re barking up the wrong tree,” she said coolly. “You shouldn’t be asking me for help. Go ask Linda. She’s got better connections.”
“That’s ridiculous!” he snapped.
Linda’s just a sweet, innocent girl–there’s no way she’d have that kind of access.
Alice caught the look on his face and knew exactly what he was thinking.
“I’ve already handed you a solution,” she said. “Whether or not you’re smart enough to use it, that’s your call.
“But if you’re coming to beg help from the sister you despise, you must really care about that mentor of yours.
“Why not try the one you actually like? Wouldn’t that make more sense?”
With that, she didn’t even wait for a reply. She turned on her heel and walked off toward the exit.
That awkward interruption had turned out to be a perfect excuse to ditch the crowd. She slipped right into her car and was gone in seconds.
Back outside, Humbert and Byron were fuming.
Kate, however, didn’t even blink. She was used to this by now. Alice had always been the quiet one.
She never started drama–but if trouble showed up at her door?
Alice knew how to return the favor–tenfold.
Kate gave a sigh. “Alright, alright, don’t get worked up. At least now we know where she is. Next time, we’ll know where to find her.”
