She’s working with another female warrior who doesn’t seem impressed with her request for assistance.
“Why don’t you show me what you’re doing,” I say. “And I’m sorry, I don’t remember your name.”
“It’s Eliza, Alpha.”
“Eliza, why don’t you take defense and Violent you take offense.”
They get into position and if Violet were any kind of warrior, Eliza would never have been able to get her on the ground so easily.
“See, I’m just not getting it,” she pouts, holding out her hand for me to help her up in a move so blatantly obvious that I have to force myself not to roll my eyes.
I mentally sigh, but I take her hand and help her up with less force than I normally would, so she doesn’t fake stumble into me.
“Switch and let’s see how you do, Eliza,” I say.
Once again, Eliza takes Violet down much too quickly.
“You see?” Violet says, from the ground. She’s got her eyes open so wide she looks like a deer in headlights.
“Yes, I do see the problem, Violet. You need to work on your strength. If you can’t stay on your feet longer than thirty seconds, you shouldn’t be considered a warrior at all,” I tell her.
I watch Eliza duck her head quickly to hide her grin.

“What?” Violet asks, obviously offended.
“This is not a difficult maneuver, Violet. If you can’t master this, then you’re never going to be able to keep up with the other lessons I teach. I would suggest that you work on building your strength so you can hold your own on the sparring field,” I say to her. “Tomorrow, rather than coming to warrior training, you should go to the gym and begin working to increase your strength. Let’s try that for a week and then you can come back next week and try again.”
She stares at me, mouth agape. I look around, searching for a new opponent for Eliza and my eyes connect with Enya’s. She’s been watching the interaction, and I can tell from her face that she’s annoyed. I’m just not sure if she’s annoyed with me or Violet.
I realize that she has far outmatched the warrior I put her with, letting me know that she wasn’t showing me her complete skill set yesterday. I may have to pull her aside like I did with Shane so she feels comfortable showing me how strong she really is.
“Enya, you’re with Eliza,” I say, needing to mix up the group a bit. “Violet, you’re done for today.
“But Alpha …” she begins.
“When you return next week, we’ll assess your strength and see if you can continue in warrior training,” I say, cutting off her argument.
“Yes, Alpha.”
As Enya passes me, I see her fighting a smile. I guess she was annoyed with Violet, not me.
When we finish warrior training, I meet up with Braden. “I need to assess your skills, but I have some other things I need to take care of today.”

‘Anything I can help you with?” he asks.
I wait for everyone else to leave the sparring field before I turn back to him.
“What do you think of the timing of the attack on Alpha Colin and this pack?”
He looks at me a moment before running his hand through his hair and sighing, walking away then turning back.
“Hindsight being twenty–twenty? It was awfully convenient.”
