“Fuck yeah, I do. You took out a Beta and five warriors,” he says.
I look at Shane to see if he has any questions for him.
“Thank you for your honesty, Jack. In the future, if you have questions or concerns about how the pack is being run, please bring those to myself or Alpha Christian,” Shane says.
“Yes, Alpha,” he says.
“Are you willing to accept me as your Alpha?” I ask him.
When he agrees, I slice my hand, and he says the words to commit to me and this pack. After he drinks and I feel the mind link click in, I release him.
“What do you think?” I ask Shane when he’s gone.
“I think I was right, that he was the easy one. I get it that he didn’t trust the safety of the pack. I am griéving and I am young,” he says.

“But you’re not stupid or weak. You’ll get there. When we’re done, maybe in a day or two, I’d like to go over the timing of the attack, your father’s admission to the pack hospital, and his death. Something about what Jack just said triggered something in mind.”

secure in the pack, but they’re feeling better about it now that I’m here. They both accept me as their Alpha and then are released.
It isn’t until we speak with Corey that I start to see problems.
“We were attacked. Our Alpha died. That doesn’t leave warriors feeling confident in an Alpha heir who is underage. What if they come back and attack us again,” Corey asks, slouching arrogantly in his chair.
“Why did they attack?” I ask him.
“How the fuck should I know. He’s the Alpha heir. Ask him.”
“I have,” I say, even though I haven’t. I hadn’t gotten that far into processing the events of the pack, but as we’ve been talking to the warriors, that niggling feeling in the back of my head has become more pronounced. Something is off about the timing of the attack on this pack and way in which Alpha Colin died.
I can feel Shane’s question in the mind link. He knows we haven’t talked about it, but he’s smart enough not to say anything in front of Corey.
“It’s strange, isn’t it Corey? The timing of the attack?” I ask, watching him carefully. If I hadn’t been watching for it, I wouldn’t have seen it. A flicker, just a momentary one, but it was there in his eyes.
“I wouldn’t know. I’m just a warrior,” he says, still smug and arrogant.
“Yes, you are. A warrior who has actively been working against Alpha heirs in this pack. I’m not sure I feel comfortable letting you out of the cells yet,” I say, watching the arrogance turn to fury.
I’m ready the moment he leaps at me. I smash my fist into his nose, hearing the crunch as it breaks.

I watch his body collapse to the ground at my feet as the guards rush
- in.
“Put him back in the cell,” I say, waiting until they’re gone before turning to Shane.
“We need to look into the attack on your pack and your father’s death. I’m starting to think that the first wasn’t random and the second wasn’t accidental.”
