I nod as I hear Christian turn the water off in the bathroom. I agree that we can trust the person the Council sent, but did they have to send someone who is so ridiculously attractive? I mean seriously, does the man have a flaw? On top of being confident, powerful, and an obviously excellent fighter, he has to be stunningly gorgeous as well?
When Christian sits back down, still wiping his hands dry, he looks at Shane. “I won’t let you fail and I won’t let you disappoint your father. That’s why I’m here. You were right to call the Council. I’m sure you’re a very strong Alpha, but you’re suffering in a mountain of grief and that’s a lot for anyone to take on, let alone a sixteen–year–old who thought he still had a couple of years before he had to take on the pressures of being an Alpha.”
“You heard me?” I ask him, shocked.
“I ranked top in the Sensory class at the Academy, but I also inherited my mother’s heightened sense of hearing and I’ve honed my father’s heightened sense of smell. I can also see better than most, but that’s my greatest sensory weakness,” he says, making me frown.
“You mean your weakest sensory strength, don’t you? Since you ranked top in the Sensory class,” I say, making him smile.
“I guess it depends on how you look at it,” he says.
“Well, you’re number one on the leaderboard. I’m pretty sure there’s only one way to look at it,” I say to him.
He holds my gaze long enough that I have to fight not to squirm. “Are you ready?”

“For?” I ask him.
“To accept me as your Alpha.”
“Sure thing, Numero Uno.”
What the hell is wrong with me? Why did I just say that. Even Shane is giving me a side–eye wondering what’s going on with me.
He raises his eyebrow. “I’m getting the feeling that me being number one on the leaderboard is a problem for you.”
“Nope, no problem,” I say. It wouldn’t be a problem if he wasn’t making me feel so flustered.
“Good,” he says, turning to Shane.
“Do you, Alpha Shane Ward, accept me as your Alpha?” he says, holding out his hand again.
“I do,” Shane says. Christian slices his hand without flinching and Shane licks his blood. I watch Shane jerk, but he doesn’t say anything.
“Next,” he says, turning to me and switching hands. I notice that the slice on this hand is already healed.
“Do you, Alpha Enya Ward, accept me as your Alpha?” he asks, watching me with those intense blue–grey eyes.
“I do,” I say. He slices his palm and I take his hand in mine, feeling the heat of his hand soaking into my mine. I’ve never considered a man’s hands to be muscular and sexy, but somehow, his are.
I lean over, smelling his clean, foresty, masculine scent that makes my stomach do flip–flops. I lick the blood off his palm and I instantly understand why Shane jerked. I knew Alpha Christian was powerful.

But knowing it and feeling that power as his mind connects to mine, are something very different.
‘Easy, Enya,‘ he says in my mind. My eyes snap to his. ‘You don’t need to fear my power. I am here to protect you, not hurt you.‘
I nod and look away from those intense eyes.
“Can I have my hand back?” he asks. I can hear the teasing tone in his voice. I yank my hands away from his.
“Sorry.”
“Not a problem. Now, I’d like you to preside over the ceremony, Shane. I think it will be good for the pack to realize that we are partners from the get–go. Have you ever done that before?”
“No, but I’ve seen it done,” he says.
“It’s a good time for you to address the pack. I would suggest that you think about what you want to say to them. I would acknowledge that with the loss of your parents, your pack is in a time of transition. During that transition, you will all be accepting a substitute or temporary Alpha. That is my suggestion, but you should speak from your heart. Let the pack know that you’re in agreement with what is happening.”
“Okay.”
“I will also be informing everyone that I will not accept any insurrection against me or either of you. Anyone caught trying to cause an uprising in this pack from now on will be killed at once.”
“Killed?” I ask, looking at Shane.
“You have pack members who have already started to turn against you.

I don’t know all of them, but there are six in your cells right now. Do you disagree that your Beta was turning your pack members against you?” he asks me.
