Chapter 44

Chapter 44

Eden

The food fades into mist, just like Azriel said it would. I watch it happen until I’m left staring at the empty air. My stomach is full now, but my heart aching for more

More of him

But falling for the man who is going to be the end of you isn’t wise. Azriel’s sister is going to eat my flesh and blow out the light in my eyes. She wants me dead, and since Azriel knows that I’m a fox, maybe it doesn’t matter what kind of omega I am

The fae people are still my enemies. They want me dead, and I shouldn’t want anything to do with them

So why does my heart hurt every time I think of Azriel? Why do I crave him

I curl into myself on the cold stone floor, letting the darkness press down, thick and suffocating. I might not like it, but sleeping is easier than dealing with my troubled emotions

And sleep comes fast, dragging me under like a riptide

I dream

The forest is endless. Moonlight cuts through the trees in broken shards, and mist coils around my ankles. I know without asking that it’s Azriel’s powers

He’s here

The tall fae steps out from the shadows like he belongs to them. Beautiful in the way that knives are beautiful. Lethal. Sharp. Like you might bleed if you touch them in the wrong way, or try hugging them

My heart pounds faster the longer I look at him, a broken beat stumbling painfully against my ribs

He says nothing at first, just watches me like he’s afraid if he blinks, I’ll disappear. Like he’s the one who’s starving now

I take a step toward him

So does he

You shouldn’t look at me like that,” he says, voice hoarse

Like what?I whisper

Like you trust me.”

I tilt my head, feeling something reckless unfurl in my chest. Maybe I do.”

There’s a flicker of pain in his violet eyes. You shouldn’t,says, yet he is the one stepping closer

My tone grows almost playful since I’ve never seen him like this. And why is that?”

He breathes a laugh, but its pained. Don’t play games with me, Eden. You already know the answer.”

Maybe I need to hear it.”

His Adam’s apple bobs. You’re falling for your executioner.”

I fall silent, then. Am I falling for you, Azrjél?”

Chapter 44

His lips curl a little, but again, he looks more pained than happy. You make me hate what I am

I blink, the confession slicing through me

Is that how he truly feels? This isn’t a trick

No. I don’t think it is Gods, this is how he feels

I reach out for him, fingers trembling when I touch his broad chest. His heart is racing, just like mine, and I look into his eyes. You make me wish I was more.”

Azriel shudders like I’ve struck him. Like looking at me is breaking him apart. I don’t know what to do with that revelation so I keep staring at him. He does the same. Neither one of us moves. We just absorb each other

Wanting. Breaking. Falling

Then he moves, grabbing my hips and yanking me against his strong body so fast that the next breath whooshes from my lungs. Not that I need to breathe. Not when his mouth crashes into mine, savage and hungry

A gasp gets swallowed by his mouth, lost when his tongue sweeps into my mouth, claiming me like his. He is in such control of my mouth that I couldn’t dream of kissing him back

Doesn’t stop me from trying

I pour everything into kissing him back and Azriel smiles against my lips. He doesn’t bully me for being less experienced. He just shoves his tongue deeper, rating me like his life depended on it. Like he can’t get enough of me. His hands roam and heat floods me in return. I like it when he palms one of my breasts, feeling this ache start between my thighs. I want more. So much more

My hands slide up his chest. I’ve never been this reckless. Never touched a boy. Now I’m memorizing the hard lines of Azriel’s muscles, the desperate way he’s holding himself back. My hands grow more experimental and he groans into the kiss, a needy sound that makes my knees buckle

He likes it when I touch him

It feels like a victoryuntil Azriel takes over by cupping the back of my head, tilting it so he can deepen the kiss until I’m drunk on him

His other hand trails down my spine, burning a path straight to my hips, gripping them like he needs me closer, closer

Azriel,I gasp against his lips, and the sound of his name wrecked and wild on my tongue makes him snarl softly

pal name dange

His mouth finds my throat, teeth grazing the skin there in a dangerous promise. You have no idea what you’re doing to me,he growls

I clutch at his shirt. Then show me.”

He freezes, the tension in him vibrating so hard I feel it in my bones

If I start,he whispers, I won’t be able to stop.”

The honest desperation in his voice makes my heart fracture in my chest

I don’t want you to stop,I whisper back

A harsh sound rips from him. It’s a broken, furious sound and for a second, I think he’ll give in. That he’ll take whatever this thing between us wants to

become

But then the ground shudders. The dream is warping, the forest tearing apart

Azriel jerks back, eyes witd

No!he snarls at the shadows closing in. You can’t have her. Not yet!”

Chapter 44

He tries to reach for me, but something stronger yanks him away

I reach out too late, screaming his name. Azriel!”

And then the dream explodes into light and I wake up gasping, drenched in sweat

The cell is dark. Silent

But my heart is still hammering, my lips still tingling from his kiss, my whole body thrumming with want

I press two trembling fingers to my mouth, feeling the ghost of him there. That kiss was our best one and as I keep touching my lips, my fox stretches inside me. Her eyes meet mine inside my head, and then I hear my own voice

Beautiful boys bring the most trouble
